Upstream Life – Film Introduction

Once confident and full of ambition, Gao Zhilei (played by Xu Zheng) finds himself “slowing down” in midlife under the weight of reality. A momentary impulsive decision causes him to fall from being his family’s “pride” to a marginalized figure in society. Little does he know, this is only the beginning of his “upstream life.”

A series of unexpected setbacks strike like a storm, forcing him to confront himself once again. When the burden of life truly sets in, he chooses to become a food delivery rider, starting over from a new beginning.

As he navigates the streets and alleys of the city, Gao Zhilei meets a group of like-minded “rider” companions. Through shared experiences, he gains a deeper understanding of human warmth and hardship, gradually reclaiming the courage and belief he once lost, and redefining the direction of his life along this challenging path.
